Bright Star is a bluegrass-infused, Southern Gothic musical with music, book, and lyrics by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell. Set in North Carolina across two intertwined time periods—the 1920s and the mid-1940s—the show tells a story of heartbreak, redemption, and the unexpected turns our lives can take.

At its center is Alice Murphy (Cammie Tatam & Giada Kellner), the sharp, emotionally guarded editor of the Asheville Southern Journal. When a young soldier and aspiring writer named Billy Cane (Riley Smith & Ryden Alvarado) returns home from World War II and seeks her guidance, their lives collide in ways neither expects.

As the narrative alternates between eras, the audience uncovers Alice’s own hidden past—one involving youthful love, devastating loss, and a secret that has shaped her entire life. The truth unfolds piece by piece like a folktale mystery.

Musically, Bright Star stands out for its warm, Appalachian-style score: banjo, fiddle, acoustic guitar, close harmonies, and heartfelt ballads. The songs range from joyous and high-energy (“Sun is Gonna Shine,” “Another Round”) to deeply emotional (“At Long Last,” “Please, Don’t Take Him”).

The show is ultimately about hope, resilience, and the power of stories to heal. It’s sentimental without being saccharine, grounded in Americana, and beloved for its sincerity and emotional punch.

Welcome to The Curtain Call Club of Woodstown, where the spotlight dances on the stage of Woodstown's rich theatrical history.

Our mission is to weave the magic of performing arts into the fabric of our community. Established in 1934 as an organization of Woodstown alumni performers supporting Woodstown students during the Great Depression, the Curtain Call Club was a theatrical institution in the heart of Woodstown until 1964.

In 2025, sixty years later, the Woodstown Theatre Department is reviving the Curtain Call Club and reigniting its commitment to supporting the High School and Middle School theatre programs through fundraising, community engagement, and educational enrichment.

We extend a warm welcome to both parents of current Woodstown High School and Middle School Drama Club students, proud Woodstown High School Drama Alumni, and dedicated members of our Woodstown-Pilesgrove community to join hands in supporting our student and ensuring our stage remains a vibrant center for creativity.
